Hamta Pass is one of the most amazing treks for beginners to Himalayan trekking. The trek route with remarkably rich with vegetation has lot of scenic landscapes and huge rock formations. Explore trails that meander through alpine forests. The place is a religious Jamdagini Rishi. This trek is a gateway to the Spiti Valley from the Manali valley.

Detailed Hampta pass trek itinerary

Day 1

Reporting and Acclimatization at Rumsu

All the participant will report at Rumsu base camp, by 10 am. Registration process followed by acclimatization walk to the neighbouring village. Adventure activity* followed by orientation in the evening. Rumsu village is 5 km from Naggar. Participant coming via bus from Delhi or Chandigarh make sure you get down at “Patlikuhal” (pronounced as patli – cool), from there you may board a cab to Rumsu.

Day 2

Rumsu to Chikka

After morning breakfast we will start the day’s trek with a beautiful drive to Hamta dam from Rumsu at 8 am. The trek to Chikka starts from Hamta Dam and is easy. It takes around 2-3 hours to complete it. There is a small forest patch and then two wooden bridges before you reach the camp site. Chikka has big rock boulders and a beautiful waterfall.
Overnight in tents at Chikka.

Day 3

Chikka to Balu ka Ghera

After morning breakfast we will start the trek for Balu Ka Ghera. Trek duration is around 4 to 5 hours from Chikka to Balu ka Ghera scaling 11900 feet. The initial part of the trek goes through the bank of the river crossing few rock boulders. There is a water stream that needs to be crossed on the way.

Balu ka Ghera is a large plain ground on the bank of the river and camping at this spot is a dream in reality. One can spot Indrasan, the highest peak of Manali valley from here. Snacks would be served in the evening followed by dinner. Overnight camping at Balu Ka Ghera.

Day 4

Balu ka Ghera to Hamta Pass. Descend to Balu Ka ghera.

Today’s trek starts early as we will try covering the maximum snow patch before sun rise. The trek route  from Balu Gehra towards Hamta Pass is a moderate climb, scaling 4,200 meters. The trek route is covered with snow, so starts by 6 am in the morning from Balu ka Gera. It takes around 4 to 5 hours to reach the top of the Hamta Pass.
We will then descend back to Balu Ka Ghera camp site. Overnight stay at Balu Ka Ghera.

Day 5

Descend to Hamta Dam. Departure from Manali.

After morning breakfast we will start our descend to Hamta dam via the same route. The descend is normal and takes around 5 hours.  Jeep Ride to Manali. Departure will happen from Manali by 5 PM.

  • Thermal wear (1-2 pairs)
  • Trekking shoes (should have ankle support, good grip, and waterproof)
